Articles of the Day

Sometimes something sounds like a good idea, but once it's put into practice it turns out that it wasn't such a good idea after all. Sometimes once a bad idea is put into practice, it's very hard to root it out. When I was younger, I thought socialized medicine sounded like a great idea. Of course, I had a serious lack of understanding back then and a very naive worldview. Nowadays, I could list at least a dozen reasons why socialized medicine is a terrible idea (socialized anything is a bad idea, btw). But instead of using what little energy I have formulating intelligent arguments against what is a very, very bad idea, I will direct you here and here.

I understand the desire we have to "fix" healthcare -- there are tragic stories out there and it's right not to want people to suffer. The thing we need to realize is: socialized medicine will not "fix" anything. It will make things worse. That is what we can gleam from the results of its implementation in other countries. Of course, with Obama in the White House, I think we're going to get it. And I'm already pretty scared by what we've been getting from Washington these past few years and especially the last few months.

I agree! Socialized medicine will only make our healthcare system worse. Go look at socialized countries all over the world and you will see the evidence. Plus anything run by our country is pretty inept: IRS, DMV, FEMA, the welfare system, etc. The socialization of our country is probably necessary before CHrist comes again, though. So maybe I'll look on the bright side, repent more, and look forward to the day when Christ will save us from ourselves. And by the way, thanks for always passing good info like this along. You rock!

I have a hard time with this one because my Christian side says what would Jesus do? (total cliche I know, but here goes). I feel bad when I stand up and say "yeah Capitalism is liberating and I work hard therefore I am" so on and so forth... I understand Capitalism and the fabulousness (not a word, I know) of it... but some moments I wonder - "aren't we suppose to be taking care of each other and mankind alike? Maybe people are working hard too, just not making enough to afford $300+/mo for privatized/monopolized health care". Then I think: "ok, if each person who wanted health care went in and volunteered and served time in exchange for health care etc... wait.. that's the big bad word socialism, possibly embarking upon communism".

At the end of the day, yes we are faced with Socialized medicine because we have been faced with socialized everything, we just haven't noticed it until now. School systems - run and monitored by the government so they are controlling exactly where and how our minds are expanded to. Television/radio, same scenario. Social Security: "work, hard we'll save your money for you and you can grow thinking this is a retirement fund... oops we spent it you're out of luck". I agree, that EVERYTHING the government has organized like Rachel stated (IRS, etc... social security, medi-care) is not too successful as planned, to say the least.

However... our country has a horrible way of keeping the poor people poor and sick. Ex: Food. We offer horribly unhealthy CHEAP options. Anything naturally healthy is very expensive.

The gap between upper class and anything below is widening AND the middle class is deminishing into the lower class.

It's easy (trust me, I know) to sit back and say that "I work hard! And work for these luxuries such as privatized health care, dental care etc... And those lazy poor people shouldn't make me pay higher taxes so they are taken care of". What would Jesus say? See what I mean? I'm totally torn, and know there has to be a better answer out there than what the Obama admin. is setting up. UGH.

Ahhh, this is too long - SO SORRY.

I'll end with this: something needs to change in order to stop the gap from getting larger... however, socialized medicine is not the answer! Unfortunately our population seems too large for the people to create a solution w/o the government. I just don't know... It's going to get bad, but hey isn't it suppose to?

Good post Jessice!!! You got the nuerons firing there!

I don't know enough to know what the solution to health care is, I just know it's not socialized medicine.

And I think the key is we, as individuals, are supposed to freely choose to take care of each other. We are not supposed to be forced by government taxation to take care of other people.

And I just want to let people know, I am a total believer in the "are we not all beggars" concept. I try to freely serve people when and where I can, without spending too much time about whether or not they "did it to themselves." Not perfect at that certainly, but it's a way I try to be.
